- Löyly – refers to the steam and heat released when water is poured over the hot stones.
- Kiulu – is a wooden or metal sauna bucket that holds water before it’s thrown onto the stones.
- Kauha/Lauta – a long handle ladle that is used to pour water over the stone.
- Kiuas – the sauna stove that is used to heat the stones, can be with wood fire, or electric.
- Kiuaskivet – the stones placed on top of the kiuas, usually peridotite, olivine, or vulcanite. These are the stones that are heated up to create steam, thus the stones are chosen for durability and steam quality.
- Lauteet – referring to the benches of the sauna. Made of alder, aspen, or cedar. The levels of the seat determines the intensity of the heat felt.
- Vihta/Vasta – a bundle of fresh birch brances used to gently slap the skin. Increases circulation while adding a refreshing birch scent. Vihta is usually used in the western side of finland, while vasta is usually used by the eastern side.
- Löylyvesi – this is the water used to create steam. Sometimes can be scented with essential oils or birch leaves, that creates a fragrant löyly when poured over the stones.
- Avantouinti – is the Finnish tradition of ice swimming. After sauna, many Finns jump into a frozen lake through a carved hole. Its gives a good shock to the body that boosts the mood and circulation.
- Saunatonttu – refered to as the sauna guardian/elf that is known to watch over the sauna. A playful reminder of sauna folklore and respect for the space.
