Health Sauna MYTH or FACT? Debunked!

There are a lot of sauna myths and misconceptions all over the world. Some actually sound like it makes sense but in reality, it doesn’t. In this article we tackle health related myths or facts which may be the funniest ones well.

1. “Sauna burns fat”

As ideal as it sounds, it’s a MYTH.. As health and fat being a relevant topic over the past decades. A lot of people who are not familiar with sauna and its functions often see sauna as a hot room that makes you sweat. Usually envisioned as a “fat burning” mechanism especially when sweating is often linked to exercise and working out. The concept of sweating from working out and sauna are often linked and misconstrued thus the hypothesis of “sauna=fat burner.” Sauna sessions may impact the users body mass and composition but currently there are no direct links to fat burning proceses.

2. “Sauna Sweating Cleanses Toxins from your Body”

According to Cleveland Clinic (n.a), sweat is mainly composed of 99% water with small amounts of salt, electrolytes and very small amounts of toxins. Therefore, this claim is a MYTH! Sweating in general is not the one responsible for releasing toxins out of the body, at least significant amounts of it. However, it does open the pores and help clean up the skin which aid in exfoliation but never to remove toxins.

3. “The longer you stay, the better”

Sauna sessions are usually mistaken and overlooked as a process that is only limited to the time spent inside the sauna. Some would see it as an “endure the heat, and reap the physiological rewards” type of angle where people try to endure a long time of heat inside the sauna thinking that the time inside the sauna is the only and most important process of the sessions. This is a MASSIVE MYTH! The more you stay in the dry air and heat of the sauna, your body is actually getting dehydrated from sweating and the dry air that absorbs all water molecules possible through osmosis which could be dangerous! This could lead to dehydration and dizziness and in severe cases could lead to hospitalization.

Human Creativity and Sauna Myths

Multiple concepts of things slapped into different situations and environments. Funny how the human mind can get creative and create visions of how things work based on readily available knowledge and connecting the dots. But that’s what makes it funny, its very human! Myths and Facts are everywhere, some pose danger and some don’t. Its important to get ourselves aware before things take a sour turn.
